Der Verlegenheitstraum der Nacktheit
The dream that one is naked or badly dressed in the presence of strangers also occurs with the addition that one felt no shame at it. But the nakedness dream deserves our interest only when shame and embarrassment are felt in it, when one wants to flee or hide and is subject to the peculiar inhibition of being unable to move from the spot and feeling powerless to change the painful situation. Only in this combination is the dream typical.
In the source Der Traum, daß man nackt oder schlecht bekleidet in Gegenwart Fremder sei, kommt auch mit der Zutat vor, man habe sich dessen gar nicht geschämt u. dgl. Unser Interesse gebührt aber dem Nacktheitstraum nur dann, wenn man in ihm Scham und Verlegenheit empfindet, entfliehen oder sich verbergen will und dabei der eigentümlichen Hemmung unterliegt, daß man nicht von der Stelle kann und sich unvermögend fühlt, die peinliche Situation zu verändern. Nur in dieser Verbindung ist der Traum typisch.

As a rule the manner of the undressing is not very distinct. One hears it told: I was in my shirt, but this is seldom a clear image; usually the state of undress is so indefinite that it is rendered in the telling by an alternative: "I was in my shirt or in my petticoat." As a rule the defect of dress is not so severe.
