Der Prüfungstraum

Everyone who has finished his secondary schooling with the matriculation examination complains of the persistence with which the anxiety dream pursues him that he has failed, must repeat the year, and so forth. For the holder of an academic degree this typical dream is replaced by another, which reproaches him with having failed his doctoral examination, and against which he objects in vain even in sleep that he has been in practice for years, is a lecturer, or heads an office.

It is the ineffaceable memories of the punishments we suffered in childhood for misdeeds committed that stir within us again at the two nodal points of our studies, at the "dies irae, dies illa" of the strict examinations.
